Betty Allen-Green serves as the Executive Director for the Chicago-Lawndale AMACHI Mentoring Program (LAMP). LAMP is an organization that provides mentors to children in North Lawndale who have one or both parents incarcerated and those children who are impacted by incarceration.
The impetus for LAMP came from her experiences as a principal in a North Lawndale School. As principal, she achieved many successes and encountered many challenges. Moreover, she worked with the community, parents and teachers to transform the school into a professional learning community.
Having worked as a teacher for twelve years, an assistant principal for seven years prior to becoming a principal, she knew that we had many gifted and talented students. However, she learned that no matter how intelligent, all children can profit from having an adult (not a family member) in their lives to provide a helping relationship, be a friend, listen and engage them in cultural enrichment activities.
In addition to serving as Director of LAMP, she works as a Chicago Public School Leadership Coach in the Office of Principal Preparation and Development. This enables her to remain close to the children and provide support and share her expertise with new principals. She is driven by her love for children and her desire to see all children learn to the maximum extent of their potential.
